Alejandro QUINCOCES
Born in Bilbao (Spain), in 1951
Urban landscapes, cities, factories, highways that Alejandro QUINCOCES fixes on canvas, extract a moment from everyday’s reality to the incessant flow of time. Layering and material effects highlight subtle vibrations. It is a mature work, strong, which plays on the tension between abstraction and referential painting. He has received numerous awards and his works are in many collections.

WRITINGS
In my painting, two complementary realities are represented: external reality—seen, felt, and perceived—and the physical reality of the canvas itself, expressed through the use of pictorial techniques. There is a deliberate desire to express and intertwine these two realities into a unified whole; a painting as a window, a painted plane.
The motifs or subjects originate from the everyday environment, from life common to all (in this sense, the emblem that characterizes contemporary society is the highway, the car journey, more so than expeditions to Mars or studies on the moon), and are seen through various media: television, photographs, or direct observation of daily life. The aim is to involve the viewer in a recognizable image, in feelings and expressions through which the painter hints at a message about the relativity of time, the course of life, the inescapable weight of social pressure, and the submission of all to fate.
The vitality of art, and painting in general, is undeniable; eating and loving remain essential. Painting is a vital opportunity, and its direct practice makes it irreplaceable for the future of art.
My clear preference is for the use of few colors, seeking “suggestions” rather than pure colors. I believe in mixed rather than pure materials, in the destruction rather than the construction of form, with the desire to transfer to the viewer the freedom to participate in the recomposition of reality as seen and felt by the artist.
By Alejandro Quincoces
–
Alejandro Quincoces’ painting style is a kind of “Impressionism/Expressionism” where the materiality of the paint plays an essential role.
What matters most to Alejandro Quincoces is the act of painting itself, its relationship to the work and its format. He is also very drawn to the effects of contrasting light and shadow; the cold light of dawn and reflected light play an important role in his work. From the Impressionist tradition, he also draws the idea that painting itself should speak of daily life, of everyday events.
His preparatory work is built in two stages: the surface, which must be sufficiently rich and varied, and the direct painting. He uses thin glazes and heavy impasto to create the atmosphere of the painting and give it a physical consistency.
His method also leads him toward the limits of the unknown. There is something uncontrollable in his painting that he seeks, something that connects him to the Romantic tradition, belonging to the “realm of the accidental.” The fortuitous brings something different to what is concrete and premeditated.
These paintings represent the Romantic idea that human beings are but a tiny part of nature. They show that the landscape is superior to humankind, which feels devoid of personality in the face of nature’s immensity.
