Since 1957, Marc Riboud has ceaselessly let his gaze fall upon China and has consecrated numerous magnificent works to this country.  “To me, places are like friends, I want to see them again, to find out what they’ve become”, he says.  And so he photographed construction sites and Maoist parades, then the effervescence of China’s opening.

Today directs his gaze towards images of silence.  Smoke, shadow, and nightfall purify his forms, reveal rhymes and punctuate rhythm.   They overwhelm the eye, leading us to the summit: Huang Shan.

« Selected amongst everything is (…), this mountain chain, located in the heart of China.  By the splendour of its peaks which reveal both a contrasted and harmonious composition, from the strange dialogue established between the pine trees and rocks, to the lively or fantastic aspects, there is a dialogue which punctuates the echoes of the rivers and waterfalls, by the presence of their smoke and clouds, their fascinating coloured nuances and varied movements which radiate from a ceaselessly renewed mystery, and finally, from all the myths attached to this high place which is haunted by legendary figures and by the best painters and poets from throughout the centuries, they incarnate, to the highest degree, the deepest and most constant elements in Chinese folklore.”
